What is Null Island?
Null Island refers to the point at coordinates 0° latitude, 0° longitude, where the equator intersects the prime meridian in the Atlantic Ocean. It has no physical landmass and exists primarily as a reference point defined by the global coordinate grid. In Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Null Island is commonly used as a default location when geospatial data are missing, incomplete, or incorrectly formatted. As a result, diverse and unrelated data, businesses, crimes, or travel records, are clustered at this single point, which in turn makes it an unlikely yet perfect hiding spot for all of us!
What is SOUL?
SOUL is an Android app that enables your phone to teleport you to Null Island by mocking your phone’s location. By downloading and enabling it, you are transported to the one place where no rules apply, where obfuscation is the default condition and not an error or a mere glitch.
Why does SOUL exist?
While precise geolocation is a useful tool if you are trying to navigate your way to work, or get picked up in the correct location by a taxi, it reveals plenty of personal information in the process. Only 4 location points are enough to identify 95% of us, where and with whom we share our professional and personal lives with, our eating habits, or the faith we practice.SOUL can’t magically fix all of this, but what it can do is obfuscate your precise location by placing you on Null Island, and provide a de facto privacy shelter by hiding in plain sight.
Unfortunately, SOUL is not available to iPhone users, as Apple’s systems won’t accept it without jailbreaking your device, a price too high to pay for most of us. If you are interested in pursuing this, no matter the consequences to your device, contact us.
